Fans of Theron’s turns in Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde will be delighted at the Oscar winner’s return to action.
She plays Andromache of Scythia, an ancient being living in the present day who protects the innocent with her squad of immortal vigilantes.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard is adapted from the graphic novel series of the same name by Greg Rucka, and also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts and If Beale Street Could Talk’s KiKi Layne.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Theron said that she was drawn to the film as an actor and producer because of its themes.
“From the first moment I read Rucka’s graphic novel, I felt like there was great potential to make this thing feel really very relevant and have it ask some real questions about humanity,” Theron said. “Is what we’re doing enough? Is what we’re doing actually changing anything? Are we making [things] better, or are we making the world worse?”
A teaser trailer for the film depicts Theron and her squad at various points in history. A longer trailer is expected soon.
The Old Guard will drop on Netflix on 10 July.
