The Lemonade artist will voice lioness Nala, while Simba will be played by Donald Glover, in the reboot of what remains one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time.
Beyonce used Facebook to announce that her long-rumoured role was confirmed.
The upcoming film will see an all-star cast of voice characters in the reboot of the beloved film, including Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumba, and John Oliver as Zazu. James Earl Jones, who voiced Mufasa in the 1994 original animation, will return to play the same role.
Young Simba and Nala will be played by up and coming actors JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright Joseph.
The film is billed along similar lines to the successful live-action remake of The Jungle Book, which was directed by Jon Favreau, who is at the helm of the Lion King reboot.
In a statement Favreau said: “It is a director’s dream to assemble a talented team like this to bring the classic story to life.”
