A large flowerpot has been placed on the spot where the green bench stood in Amsterdam, its absence having gone unnoticed for a month.
“It’s embarrassing because we do keep good track of them but it’s gone all right,” said city official Stephan van der Hoek, adding that fans had started asking where it was.
“Keep your eyes on eBay!” he joked.
It is not known where the bench has gone but before its mysterious disappearance, it had become a tourist attraction.
In the John Green film adaptation, the two lead characters played by Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley sit and kiss on the bench.
There are plans to replace it over the next few weeks so long as another is in stock.
Another main site of interest in Amsterdam is the Anne Frank House museum, where the stars also kiss.
The movie, about two teenagers who fall in love after meeting at a cancer support group, took $48.2m at the box office in its opening weekend alone.
The original novel has sold more than nine million copies internationally and has been translated into 47 different languages.
Last week, it was announced that Green’s Looking for Alaska is to follow The Fault In Our Stars onto the silver screen, directed by Sarah Polley.
