2016 Black List: The 73 hottest unproduced screenplays in Hollywood
Featuring a Madonna biopic, a comedy from Mindy Kaling and a film about a bored bank teller who discovers he's a background character in an open world video game.
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Each year, over 250 films films executives are asked to name up to ten of their favourite scripts that were written in or are somehow linked to 2016 (production talks etc) but have never actually made it as far as principal photography.
The result is the Black List (below), which is ordered most to least voted for and requires a script to have been nominated by at least six different people.
It’s a useful list: Oscar winners/nominees Spotlight, Whiplash, Argo, The King’s Speech, Foxcatcher and The Imitation Game have all featured on previous years’ editions.
2016's listee include a Madonna biopic (which came out top) a comedy about a late night chat show from Mindy Kaling and a film about a bored bank teller who discovers he's a background character in an open world action-adventure video game.
We’ll be updating this list to reflect the most intriguing screenplays, but for now here’s the full list complete with synopses (number of votes in parantheses):
