From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded at an almost unprecedented rate, now featuring three Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man films.
Despite even Ant-Man having a solo outing, there’s still no female-led Marvel blockbusters available to watch now — unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2019’s Captain Marvel.
That’s not to say there haven’t been some great female characters in the Marvel Universe, not least of all Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who debuts in Thor: Ragnarok.
Speaking to Comic Book Resources, Thompson revealed that she’s already pitched an Avengers-type team-up movie to Marvel, featuring all the prominent female superheroes we’ve already seen on screen.
“I think in that group was Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), myself, Zoe Saldana (Gamora, from Guardians of the Galaxy) — although she ran off to the bathroom, I think, so she came midway through the pitch but she had been in the rev-up to it — Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). Pom (Klementieff, Mantis) and Karen (Gillan, Nebula), who are both in the Guardians movies. Yeah, I think it was that group.
“We were just sort of all in a semicircle talking, and it just came up, because none of us really worked together – well, I suppose Zoe, and Karen, and Pom – and wouldn’t it be nice if we could all work together?
“We were sort of speculating on the ways in which it might happen in Infinity War, or might not happen. And we thought, ‘No, we should just have a whole movie where we know every day we’re going to arrive and get to work together.’ So we just ran right up to Kevin Feige and started talking about it.”
Whether Marvel executives are looking to make a female-led team-up movie remains unknown — the studio remains cagey about their plans beyond the fourth Avengers film. If Thompson has anything to do with it, there definitely will be.
