From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Seth Rogen has warned Twitter users not to let Ted Cruz’s comparison of “the left” to Avengers villain Thanos distract from his politics.

Appearing on his YouTube show Verdict with Ted Cruz on Monday (1 February), the US senator appeared to claim that Thanos, the genocidal warlord who serves as the main villain of the Avengers films, was used to convey leftist messaging that “people are a disease”.

“The left loves to virtue-signal, they love to show how virtuous they are by being willing to give away your job,” Cruz declared. “If you actually respect people, you say you ought to be able to choose what you want to do with your life… I’m not going to presume to tell you that what you choose to do is somehow illegitimate and should be eliminated.”

The comments were widely mocked online, with commenters suggesting that Cruz had little understanding of the Marvel films if he thought that Thanos was the hero of Avengers, rather than the villain.

Joining the critics was Rogen, who said that while Cruz had misunderstood the plot, people shouldn’t let the Republican politician’s comment detract from his recent actions.

“Let’s not focus on the fact that @tedcruz doesn’t understand movies and focus more on the fact that he inspired a deadly insurrection by perpetuating lies about mass voter fraud,” he tweeted.

Rogen is a vocal critic of Cruz, dubbing the politician a “white supremacist fascist” last month during a Twitter clash over Joe Biden’s plans to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement.

However, the actor rejected media labelling of his row with Cruz as a “feud”, tweeting on 24 January: “This isn’t a Twitter ‘feud.’ @tedcruz tried to overthrow our government. He inspired a deadly mob to storm the Capitol. And I think that deserves ridicule. So f*** him.”
