Susan Sarandon photobombed the Straight Outta Compton cast at the SAG Awards
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. In what might accidentally be the perfect visual metaphor for the debate surrounding the award ceremonies this year, Susan Sarandon crashed the cast of Straight Outta Compton’s party at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday.
Key members of the cast for the N.W.A biopic posed for photographers, only for Sarandon to pop up, mouth agape, behind them a la Benedict Cumberbatch.
Diversity was a hot topic at the ceremony, with Idris Elba quipping “Welcome to diverse TV” on stage and Orange is the New Black’s Laura Prepon saying: “Look at this stage, this is what we talk about when we talk about diversity.”
A racially-conscious variant of the Bechdel Test was put forward this week, named after Selma director Ava DuVernay and stipulating that a film must include ‘African-Americans and other minorities have fully realized lives rather than serve as scenery in white stories’.
In other key photo news from the ceremony, these two hung out:
