From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Waiting for a handful of celebrities to crawl across a red carpet involves a lot of avoiding dead air time; cutting to anything, talking to anyone. Unfortunately, the livestream for Suicide Squad's European premiere in Leicester Square took a turn for the extremely awkward; all thanks to one guy's poor choice of audience chant (via Digital Spy).
With the entire cast gathered on stage, host Laura Whitmore cut away to her co-host in Kiev, who was standing amidst an entire room of eager DC fans. Well, not that eager; because when he attempted to get the crowd to join in with his chant, we ended up with pretty much total silence and one man shouting the word "suicide" over and over again.
Ouch. Presumably, he was hoping for one those call and response chants, but just hadn't quite communicated what was going on to the rest of the room; leaving the camera to awkwardly linger over the scene before cutting away to a clearly stunned Whitmore and cast. The best bit of all this? Quite possibly Will Smith trying his best to contain his total bafflement; repeating over and over again, "WOW".
Wow, indeed.
An unfortunate moment, which hasn't exactly helped the flurry of drama built up around Suicide Squad's release; from its damning critical reviews, raging fans attempting to shut down said critics, and rumours of a troubled production process. We'll just have to wait and see whether the negativity currently surrounding the film ends up having any effect on the box office.
Suicide Squad hits cinemas 5 August.
