From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

With only a few months left until the arrival of American film director James Gunn’s highly anticipated DC Extended independent continuation of The Suicide Squad, the filmmaker took to Twitter to disclose the new poster for the film.

Gunn also revealed that the first trailer of the movie is set to drop later on Friday.

The film’s ensemble cast includes the likes of Australian actor Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, American actor and former WWE wrestler John Cena as the Peacemaker, English actor, rapper, and producer Idris Elba as Bloodsport, and American actor and producer Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

Given the huge popularity and commercial success of comic book movies in the past decade, The Suicide Squad naturally doesn’t come in isolation. In addition to the latest film, there’s also a spin-off TV series focusing on Cena’s Peacemaker character that will debut on HBO Max in January 2022.

The official synopsis for The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled for a joint release in cinemas and on HBO Max on 6 August 2021.
