Margot Robbie is gloriously unhinged as The Joker’s accomplice and on-off lover Harley Quinn while brief clips of Jared Leto laughing manically amid car chases, shoot-offs and explosions confirm a determination to do Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson’s iconic performances justice.
There are more hints that the depths of evil lie within Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress (her first line, “Let’s do something fun”, drips menace) as Will Smith gives this fast-paced film his best shot, quite literally, as assassin Deadshot.
The upcoming DC Comics movie from director David Ayers follows a group of imprisoned baddies who are recruited by a secret government agency to take on risky black op missions in exchange for freedom.
It seems Ayers is preparing us for something seriously dark yet colourful, crazy but hugely entertaining here, so roll on a summer of sin far more exciting than anything Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice looks set to offer us.
Suicide Squad will lead into DC's Justice league film, the concept art for which has just been released.
