Guardians of the Galaxy actor Michael Rooker has reportedly joined the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel.

The Wrap reports that Rooker has entered talks to play the DC supervillain King Shark, a humanoid shark in the comic books.

James Gunn, who directed two Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, will direct The Suicide Squad, which is set to reach cinemas 6 August 2021.

As well as starring in the Guardians franchise, Rooker also had roles in the Gunn-produced The Belko Experiment and Brightburn.

Gunn was fired from the third Guardians of the Galaxy instalment after old tweets, in which the filmmaker joked about paedophilia, were resurfaced by far-right bloggers. Following his removal from the project, Warner Bros hired Gunn to direct The Suicide Squad.

After an open-letter from various Guardians actors was widely shared online, Disney and Marvel re-hired Gunn for the third film, with work beginning on the sequel following The Suicide Squad's completion.

Other actors on board The Suicide Squad include Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and Viola Davis, all of whom are reprising their roles from the first Suicide Squad. Joining the cast are Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian and John Cena.
