Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Director Steven Soderbergh (Sex, Lies and Videotape, Ocean’s 11, Behind the Candelabra and many more great movies) has done what I’m now wishing I’d done and kept a diary of everything he watched and read in 2016.

It’s actually amazing he managed to get through any films and TV series at all given he was in pre-production and then principal photography for most of the year on Logan Lucky, an intriguing comedy coming in 2017 which sees him directing a tantalising cast.

Soderbergh kicked off the year reading I Heard You Paint Houses, presumably intrigued to see how Martin Scorsese will turn it into his next film, The Irishman.

He then caught a few new movies like Hail, Caesar! and The Birth of a Nation, as well as rewatching classics Heat, Fight Club and The Social Network.

TV-wise he dipped into Better Call Saul, Girls and Horace & Pete, before bingeing on the Olympics like everyone else.

August and September saw him wrapped up with filming, but he still found time for my favourite film of the year, A Bigger Splash.

You can read the full list below (TV shows in caps, movies in bold caps, asterisks denote short films, books are in italics and quotation marks mean a play) and grab yourself some swag from his website here.
