From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

After what feels like an eternity of waiting, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has finally been seen by people outside of LucasFilm and Disney.

Following the world premiere — attended Mark Hamill, Rian Johnson, Daisy Ridley, and other Star Wars alumni — journalists were permitted to Tweet brief social media reactions to the movie.

While not full reviews, the response has been overwhelmingly glowing. According to the critics, the blockbuster pulls some huge emotional punches and looks astoundingly good.

Of course, people are already comparing The Last Jedi with other Star Wars entries, many holding that the Episode VIII marks the best since Empire Strikes Back. Then again, that’s been said of almost every Disney-released Star Wars movie so far… Read the reactions below.

A word of warning regarding social media: beware spoilers. Unfortunately, due to the movie now being available to certain few, details may emerge online. So tread carefully!

Speaking at the premiere, Johnson dedicated the movie to Carrie Fisher, who plays Princess/General Leia.

“Once the audience sees her performance in this movie, she’s going to be there in all our hearts," he said. "It’s bizarre not having her here tonight. She would be the life of the party.”

Meanwhile, for those wanting to catch up on all the other Star Wars movies, we’ve discussed which is the best order to watch them here.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi reaches UK cinemas 14 December.
