From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

*WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI*

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is only a month away, and the anticipation is inching closer to pure hysteria.

Especially since Disney and Lucasfilm have gone out of their way to tease fans about an endless array of potentially disastrous situations which could unfold: could Kylo Ren kill his mother, Leia? (Not likely.) Will Luke be hiding a secret that could tear the galaxy apart? (Much more likely.)

However, one of the most tantalising, and heavily teased, so far has been the idea Rey may turn to the dark side. It's a thematic hint that's already cropped up in previous trailers, with a distraught Luke shouting, "Resist it, Rey", as she admits something's calling to her while training on Ahch-To. Light, darkness, but also something else...

A new spot has seemingly revealed a potentially huge moment in the film (or perhaps not so considering how careful Disney is in their marketing choices): Rey wielding Kylo Ren's lightsaber after pulling it towards her.

It feels important, but what exactly does this mean? Now, of course, the immediate suggestion is that she's now turned to the dark side, but Star Wars lore dictates that pretty much anyone can technically handle either a Jedi or Sith lightsaber - remember Finn's attempts to use Luke's lightsaber in The Force Awakens?

Rey doesn't have to have turned to the Dark Side to use Kylo's lightsaber; the bigger question at hand is how on earth she was able to use the Force to pull it away from him. Is this simply a demonstration of incredible power? Are they working together?

We'll just have to wait and see when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits UK cinemas 14 December.
