From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Mark Hamill has expressed his regret over commenting publicly on the concerns he had over his storyline in latest Star Wars film The Last Jedi.

During the promotional tour for the film, the actor expressed his difficulty in accepting the way in which writer-director Rian Johnson had decided to steer his beloved character Luke Skywalker having lived with him since A New Hope in 1977.

“Jedis don’t give up,” he previously said. “I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference, but, it’s not my story anymore. It’s somebody else’s story, and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective.”

despite not "accepting it completely," Hamill was ultimately happy to depict the scenes presented in the script because he felt it served the story well. He later ascertained, however, that he views The Last Jedi version of Skywalker as “another character” altogether.

The actor now regrets speaking so freely about his concerns, writing on Twitter: “I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public. Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make good movie.

“I got more than that,” he added, emphasising how he believes Johnson has made “an all-time GREAT one [sic].”

The Last Jedi has proved divisive since release despite critics hailing it as one of the best franchise entries to date - something we discuss in the latest episode of The Independent's podcast Kernels.

Details surrounding the cameo of Tom Hardy - which was left on the cutting room floor - were revealed last week, while a surfacing Easter Egg featured in prequel Rogue One cleared up a plot twist that many had earlier deemed too "convenient."
