Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Star Wars Facebook page is now letting users add a lightsaber to their profile picture with the mere click of a button.

Though we now know lightsabers may be a technical possibility, there are only a few days to go until we all pack into our local multiplex for The Force Awakens; that's definitely not enough time to become a master scientist and build one for ourselves. Thankfully, Facebook has now come the rescue; allowing users to fool their friends into the belief they've become a fully-fledged Jedi or Sith master.

The official Star Wars account for the site has built an incredibly simple tool for the purpose; their post, featuring Finn (John Boyega)'s poster with lightsaber in hand, claims, 'Awaken the Force within by adding Finn's lightsaber to your profile picture.' All you need to do to make that happen is click the button 'Try it', which will then allow you to overlay either Finn's blue lightsaber of Kylo Ren's intimidating, hilted red lightsaber to your profile picture.

Yes. The ultimate decision has finally descended upon Star Wars fans: do you fight for the light side, or the dark?

Facebook certainly isn't the only website which has been getting in on the action; with Google recently coding a fairly incredible Easter Egg into its website. Just search for, 'a long time ago in a galaxy far far away' and you'll be treated to the results appearing as the classic, opening credits crawl.

The Force Awakens has now celebrated its international premiere, with the film's stars and a legion of stormtroopers rocking up to honour the cinematic event of the year. Fans should be glad to note that initial reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with most declaring the film worthy in its spirit to stand beside the classic trilogy.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in UK theatres 17 December.
