From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may be keeping its secrets more tightly under wraps than most big movies these days, but hints are still creeping out in unexpected ways. This week it’s the turn of the Duracell ad, which seems to have revealed the new C-3PO, complete with mystery red arm.

‘Battle for Christmas Morning’ sees a little boy rush to get some batteries for his new lightsaber, only to find C-3PO and his best mate R2-D2 waiting in his room to warn him of the dangers.

“Sir, I must advise against this. The odds of survival are 608 to 1,” he says, before a battle with Stormtroopers breaks out in the corridor.

Downstairs, his mother gives him another weapon and calls him their “only hope” before he runs outside to join his sister Lisa, who is notably dressed as Daisy Ridley’s Rey, in defending their family home with The Force. Obviously, it’s all in their imagination, but it’s a pretty sweet sequence nonetheless.

But enough with Duracell’s storyline, it’s the seventh film’s plot we really care about. Fans have seen a couple of trailers and an official poster so far but notably, C-3PO’s red arm has been missing from both.

Entertainment Weekly noticed the arm in two shots from behind-the-scenes footage shared at Comic-Con last summer and speculated that it could be a marking of The First Order, which would make him a baddie. It had been grey in the earlier trilogy.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally arrives on 17 December, so there’s not long to wait to find out the truth.
