From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally out in cinemas (Woohoo!). If you have seen the film, the chances are you didn’t hang around for the entire credits to roll out, probably excited to get out and chat to your friends about what you just saw.

Luckily, however, one of the journalists at HitFix did stick around and read all the names that appeared on screen.

Surprisingly, there was a credit for ‘BB-8’s voice consultant’. If you’re not aware who (what) BB-8 is, it is the little football droid that’s now everywhere, including on bags of oranges.

Of course, you would presume that those beeps and boops were all computer generated by some random tech guy, but it turns out that a prominent comedian was behind it: Bill Hader.

Star Wars cast have the force

"JJ [Abrams] f**king around with this sound effects app on his iPad that was attached to a talk box operated by me,” he told HitFix.

“It looked ridiculous but it made BB-8's voice. At first I tried doing a voice, but we all agreed it sounded too human.”

Ben Schwartz - best known for House of Lies -also helped out in an unknown capacity, billed alongside Hader in the credits.

It is unknown how much of the pairs voice work made it into the final film. Hader has previously done voice work with Abrams, having provided the voice for the USS Vengeance’s computer in Star Trek Into Darkness.
