From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Two Star Wars fans who surprised composer John Williams with a rendition of his iconic theme in his garden were met with a glowing review from the man himself.

Young trumpeter Bryce Hayashi, 13, performed a tribute to the Oscar-winning legend with flugelhorn player Michael Miller and fortunately, Williams was at home to enjoy it.

The 84-year-old can be seen standing in his doorway halfway through a video recorded by a neighbour, before coming out to meet the musicians, shake their hands and thank them for their “fantastic” arrangement of his music.

“I started to listen and thought ‘Oh they’ll never make it’ and they did it!” he said of Hayashi’s trumpeting skills on the song’s higher part.

Fans have praised Williams, who composed the scores to Jaws, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the first three Harry Potter movies, for being “cool” and “humble” about the impromptu performance despite Hayashi and Miller potentially disturbing him.

“That was both courageous and totally awesome!” wrote one fan on YouTube, while others congratulated them for “nailing it”.

Here’s hoping Williams’ positive response doesn’t encourage a full orchestra to turn up next or he might just change his tune…
