From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

There are many, many people who believe the Star Wars prequel trilogy were truly awful and - more often than not - George Lucas is blamed.

However, not everyone thinks they were bad, as a petition to get Lucas back on board to direct Episode IX has been signed by over 15,000 people in just two weeks.

The petition reads: “Bring back George Lucas for the Star Wars movies. Put the father of the franchise as director of Episode IX. We really want this, please.

“We have no problem with Colin Trevorrow, but he's not the right guy to direct Star Wars Episode IX. George Lucas as director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father of Star Wars and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away....

“We would like to see him again involved with the franchise. Thank you so much.”

Now, first of all, Episode IX already has a director, Colin Trevorrow, best known for last year’s Jurassic World, as pointed out by the petition. Could you imagine Disney overthrowing someone they’ve already put in place for no reason other than a petition?

Secondly, Lucas has already severed ties with Disney, having called them “white slavers in an interview. Admittedly, he did apologise for the statement, but it could have some impact on their relationship.

Thirdly, the director has also expressed how the latest film is too ‘retro’ and said how he hated the criticism he got from people regarding the prequel trilogy.

So as much as “we” want this to happen, realistically, it is never going to. He doesn’t want to come back, and quite frankly, a lot of other people don’t want him back either. If this did happen, could you imagine how many people would sign a petition asking Disney to get rid of Lucas?

Or perhaps those who hate the prequels are an outspoken minority? We should probably see how this petition does before coming to conclusions like that…
