In one of the more unexpected casting moves of the day, reports suggest that actor and comedian Ade Edmondson has secured a role in Star Wars Episode VIII.

The star of Nineties sitcom Bottom will appear in a "top secret" role, according to The Sun.

“Ade is one of the most-loved comedy stars in the UK," stated a source. "But even he would admit Star Wars is a surprise move for him."

Despite Rian Johnson being the one on directing duties for the sequel, the source went on to claim that Episode VII: The Force Awakens filmmaker JJ Abrams was a driving force behind the casting decision.

"Given [Edmondson's] old comedy characters, it would make sense for them to give him an eccentric part.”

Journeying to a galaxy far far away would be a huge coup for Edmondson; his recent media appearances have largely been restricted to reality shows such as The Great Sport Relief Bake Off and Celebrity Masterchef - which he won both of - but a role in BBC's War & Peace saw him return to his acting roots.

A spokeswoman for Edmondson has refused to comment.

The as-of-yet untitled Episode VIII - set to be released December 2017 - will see John Boyega and Daisy Ridley reprise their roles of Finn and Rey while new additions to the cast include Benicio del Toro and Laura Dern.

Next up in the Star Wars saga will be Gareth Edwards' prequel Rogue One which hits cinemas on 16 December. The film is widely expected to feature a cameo from the franchise's classic villain Darth Vader.
