From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Your support makes all the difference. If you’ve been to the cinema recently, chances are you saw a Marvel Studios film (or at least the trailer for one of their superhero flicks).
The studio’s latest blockbuster, Doctor Strange, is currently reigning atop the worldwide box-office with no signs of budging despite the fantastic Arrival hitting cinemas this weekend.
Earlier this year, Captain America: Civil War managed to impress the world, winning over high critical praise while boasting over $1 billion in ticket sales.
One of the many, many characters to have debuted in that film was Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, the rebooted reboot version of the webslinger, the actor following in the footsteps of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.
Like many of those actors who sign their lives away to Marvel, Holland has a multi-film contract, revealing to The Hollywood Reporter exactly how many blockbusters he has to do before being able to escape.
"They give you options and those could be exercised whenever. Like a cameo in Avengers," he told the publication. "I'm unclear as to which movies though. I do know I have three Spider-Man [appearances in other] movies and three solo movies contracted.”
That’s six appearances as Spider-Man. SIX. Including three solo films. At least we won’t be getting another reboot anytime soon. Plus, even if that sounds inhibiting for the actor, he’s quite happy with the contract.
“But if you have another movie, Marvel is so good at working around it,” he continued. “They’re very respectful of your life, really. They understand that you have to work on other movies, and they try and fix it up so you can work around each other.”
Meanwhile, Sony - who still own the rights to Spider-Man but have worked a deal with Marvel so Holland can appear in their Cinematic Universe - recently revealed they are working on another, non-MCU related Spider-Man spin-off, presumably about Venom. (Apparently, they didn’t learn from their Amazing Spider-Man series flop.)
Also, in other Spider-Man related news, the composer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming has been revealed: Doctor Strange’s Michael Giacchino.
