When Marvel Studios announced they were working with Sony on a new Spider-Man film there was a lot of discussion surrounding whether the main character would be Peter Parker or Miles Morales.

If you are not a comic book aficionado you may not be aware that Miles was the first black Spider-Man, debuting in 2011’s Ultimate Fallout #4 following Peter’s death.

It has since been revealed that in the upcoming film Tom Holland will take centre stage as Peter. However, that doesn’t mean Miles won’t be appearing in the movie.

When asked if there had been any serious discussion over Miles being the main character by Yahoo! films, director Jon Watts said: “I can’t talk about that, because, you know, that will reveal too much. We’re still writing the story… we haven’t finished all the way through the story yet, so who knows.”

Surely saying that ‘discussing Miles reveals too much’ is clear indication he will be appearing. In previous Marvel films they have had numerous side-kicks who - in the comics - become the titular character. For instance, in Captain America, Bucky has a minor role in The First Avenger, then becoming the Winter Soldier in the second film. In the comics, Bucky takes over as Captain America, and many suspect the same will happen in the films.

At one point rumours spread that Donald Glover - Community, Magic Mike XXL, The Martian - may be reprising the role of Miles, having voiced the character in the animated series.

Tom Holland will first appear as Spider-Man in next year’s Captain America: Civil War alongside Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jnr. and Scarlett Johansson.

Spider-Man will hit cinemas in 2017.
