Disney and Sony have reconciled for one more Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland – after a very public falling-out that suggested the superhero would no longer appear in Marvel movies.

The new film is slated for a 16 July, 2021 release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, told the publication.

The news comes as a complete reversal of a previous reported dispute between Disney, which owns Marvel Entertainment and Sony, which owns the movie rights to the Spider-Man character.

A previous deal had enabled the two studios to work together, bringing Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The partnership resulted in two Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).

It also enabled Holland’s Spider-Man to appear in other MCU films such as Captain America: Civil War and the Avengers franchise.

Despite this successful collaboration (both Spider-Man films became valuable box office blockbusters), Deadline reported in August that Disney and Sony had failed to reach a financial agreement, suggesting that the newly relaunched Spider-Man franchise would come to an abrupt end.

This seemed all the more shocking as the news came the month following the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, a box office hit that has now grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, ended on a cliffhanger, and suggested that Marvel’s Phase Four (following up on the end of the Infinity Saga, which wrapped up with Avengers: Endgame) would heavily rely on Spider-Man.

Some Marvel fans called for a Sony boycott after the news of the falling-out emerged.

Holland, meanwhile, said he’d had the “time of [his] life” playing the superhero, adding: “Who knows what the future holds?”

“Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe,” Feige told The Hollywood Reporter in light of the new deal.

“He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
