Last week, it was reported that the actor would be bringing his character Electro to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
This news caused some confusion considering he last played the villain in Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), back when Andrew Garfield played the web-slinger. That film was not released as part of the MCU.
The actor confirmed the news on Instagram in a post he sent before swiftly deleting it.
He wrote: “I won’t be blue in this one!! But a thousand per cent badass.”
The effects that made the villain radiate the colour blue in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were criticised at the time of the film’s release.
It’s unclear why Foxx deleted the post, but it’s no stretch to imagine Marvel weren’t happy with the actor disclosing details about the character’s appearance.
The addition of characters from non-MCU superhero films will most probably be possible thanks to the multiverse – different worlds featuring a whole host of characters, dead and alive.
Electro's return is similar to that of JK Simmons’ character J Jonah Jameson, who appeared at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). The character is taken from Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy (2002-07).
Following the news about Electro’s return, many were left questioning whether the MCU is lining up the arrival of the Sinister Six, a villainous group comprised of characters from the world of Spider-Man.
Spider-Man 3 – starring Tom Holland – will be released in 2022.
