The sequel retains the film's idiosyncratic style, with more stormy monochrome visuals with the occasional burst of colour.
Its plot revolves around Eva Green's Ava, a temptress who enlists Dwight McCartthy (Josh Brolin) in a bid to escape her ex-husband.
Juno Temple and Jeremy Piven also feature, while Alba, Bruce Willis and Rosario Dawson all return from the original 2005 movie.
A new storyline not found in Frank Miller's comics was written for the film called The Long Bad Night, of which Gordon-Levitt previously said: "They wanted to have a movie where fans of the books would still be able to look forward to something new and unexpected, so they added a story.
"I remember being really intrigued by that and I was really looking forward to, 'Oh that will be so interesting to have the actual comics to refer to as an actor', but no, I didn't."
He added that he was "stoked" after seeing the finished movie, and was impressed by Lady Gaga's cameo, which goes unteased in the trailer.
"She came in, and I was like, 'Okay, they're having a huge popstar do a scene in the movie, I understand'. But then she came in and, like, nailed it," he told Boston's JAM'N 94.5.
"She had her character down, and she was like a total pro, and did a great job. I was really impressed."
Directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For has a US release date of 22 August, 2014 and opens in the UK a week later on 29 August.
