Martin Scorsese has been attempting to get passion project Silence - based on the same name by Japanese author Shūsaku Endō - made since 1991.

Centering on two Jesuit missionaries sent to Japan in the time of Kakure Kirishitan ("Hidden Christians") following the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion, the film stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson in leading roles.

Finally, thanks to the release of Allied, the first trailer for the Oscar contender has been released, offering a first glimpse of what's to come.

According to previous reports, Silence will be Scorsese’s longest film to date, totaling 195 minutes, or three hours 15 minutes. The acclaimed director’s last film, The Wolf of Wall Street, was under the three-hour mark.

Of course, things could very well change as the film approaches release and changes happen in the editing room, but expect a lengthy feature if you head to the cinema.

Silence reaches cinemas 1 January 2017 in the UK.
