Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sean Penn has asked film fans to avoid going to the cinema if they have not been vaccinated.
The actor appeared at the premiere of his forthcoming film, Flag Day, where he thanked those in attendance for wearing masks and getting vaccinated.
Fans were only able to attend the event if they provided proof of vaccination and wore masks while inside the cinema.
Penn also had words for those who refused to be vaccinated.
“I have to say that I do request people who are not vaccinated, don’t go to the cinemas,” he said. “Stay home until you are convinced of these very clearly safe vaccines. “
He went on to call vaccinated people the “solution” and that vaccines are “a great movement of interdependence.”
The actor and director also recently issued the ultimatum that everyone working on the set of his new TV series, Gaslight, get vaccinated, or he would not return to work on the show.
Penn has also publicly called for mandatory vaccinations, telling Yahoo it is akin to setting speed limits for road vehicles:.
“This is one of those things that should be mandatory,” he said. “My deep belief, personally, is that it’s no different having everybody being able to drive 100 miles an hour in a car.”
Flag Day, which Penn directs, as well as stars in alongside his daughter Dylan, is a crime drama about a daughter’s relationship with her father.
