Rose McGowan has suggested that an arrest warrant obtained for her over possession of a controlled substance is tied up in her recent efforts to expose Hollywood's sexual assault problem.

"Are they trying to silence me?" she tweeted. "There is a warrant out for my arrest in Virginia. What a load of HORSESHIT."

She later retweeted an activist who wrote: "If @rosemcgowan would have taken that million dollars in hush money I'm quite sure this wouldn't even be a headline..." in relation to the story, adding: "FACT" herself.

The arrest warrant stems from a police investigation of personal belongings left behind on a United flight arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport on 20 January.

Police say the items tested positive for narcotics. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department obtained the warrant on 1 February.

McGowan has apparently been contacted by authorities so she can appear in a Virginia court, with the warrant being entered into a national law enforcement database.

The actor-director has been one of the leading voices against sexual harassment in Hollywood in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, helping kick-start the allegations against Weinstein and going on to lend her support to those trying to bring to justice other industry figures including, most recently, Kevin Spacey.
