Rogue One: Neo-Nazis call for boycott of Star Wars spin-off, Twitter responds appropriately
'Wait... Neo-Nazis are calling for a boycott of Rogue One because it hurts their feelings? Do they need a safe space? Who's a snowflake?'
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Men’s rights activists called on fans to boycott the film. Why? Because the film’s leads were to be portrayed by John Boyega and Daisy Ridley: a black actor and a woman.
That wasn’t the only film to be 'boycotted' last year: groups attempted to dissuade people from seeing Mad Max: Fury Road because Charlize Theron shared almost equal screen time with Tom Hardy.
Now, the alt-right, Neo-Nazis, and white supremacists are calling for people to not see Rogue One because it is, as one headline describes it, “a Jew masturbation fantasy of anti-white hatred.”
The website running that story, who we will not name, complains how “nearly all of the major characters are non-whites and the main character is an empowered white female.”
RawStory posted an initial article regarding the aforementioned blogpost along with quoting Reddit forum r/altright where users are calling for people to boycott Rogue One because it is “anti-white social engineering.”
Tweeters were quick to ridicule the ridiculous boycott, one social media user writing: “Wait... Neo-Nazis are calling for a boycott of Rogue One because it hurts their feelings? Do they need a safe space? Who's a snowflake?”
Others compared the boycott to those attempting to boycott the record-breaking Broadway musical Hamilton. Another noted: “Haven't seen Rogue One yet, and I already love it... It's making Neo-Nazis cry! If they didn't know, Star Wars is about fighting oppression!”
Judging by The Force Awakens and Fury Road, the boycott will either have no effect (or the complete opposite): The Force Awakens is the second highest grossing film of all time, taking over $2 billion at the box office, while Fury Road made $378.4 million and received 10 Oscar nominations.
Rogue One hits cinemas 15 December - here’s how to buy tickets. Disney has been reached for comment by The Independent on the boycott but has yet to respond.
