The Fleabag actor's Indiana Jones role is still unannounced, but Ford will be returning as the franchise's titular character, as is composer John Williams, who scored the first four films.
Waller-Bridge has enjoyed a massive wave of critical success over the last few years, stemming from Fleabag, which ended with its second series in 2019. She was feted with Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Writer and Outstanding Comedy Series. She was also the first Brit to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 38 years.
Waller-Bridge was also the showrunner, head writer, and executive producer for the first series of Killing Eve, which she adapted for television
Directing is James Mangold (Logan), taking over from Steven Spielberg, who directed the first four movies and will be an active producer on this iteration.
Indiana Jones 5 was initially announced last December as part of Disney’s Investor Day virtual presentation, with a tweet being shared reading: “Lucasfilm is in pre-production on the next instalment of Indiana Jones.
“At the helm is James @Mang0ld, director of Ford v Ferrari, and Indy himself, Harrison Ford, will be back to continue his iconic character’s journey. Adventure arrives July 2022.”
Spielberg, who worked on the films up until 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, announced that he was stepping down from the franchise earlier this year in order to give the character to “a new generation to bring their perspective to the story”.
While some fans suggested that the films should not go ahead without the legendary director at the helm, Mangold’s involvement reassured them of Indiana Jones’s future success.
Indiana Jones 5 arrives in theatres 29 July, 2022.
