The Normal People star announced the news on Twitter on 28 August, by retweeting The Hollywood Reporter’s original story with the caption: “I’m a very excited boy!”
The Irish actor, 24, joins Oscar-winning actor Olivia Colman plus Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and Chernobyl star Jessie Buckley.
The Lost Daughter will be an adaptation of Italian author Elena Ferrante’s 2006 novel.
The story follows Colman’s character, a college professor who becomes obsessed with a young mother and her daughter while on holiday, at the same time recalling her own, troubled memories of early motherhood.
The film has yet to be given an official release date.
Mescal recently revealed that a second season of the BBC’s hit show, Normal People, is “not on the cards”.
“I do feel like the series that has finished is its own thing, and I’m totally comfortable with that. It’s not on the cards at the moment, but if I got the opportunity to play [Connell] again, amazing,” he said.
Other than Normal People, one of his most recent roles was starring in the music video for The Rolling Stones song “Scarlet”.
