All the details you need
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With the Golden Globes and SAG Awards now out of the way the Academy Awards are looming, with Jimmy Kimmel set to host this year's ceremony on 4 March, 2018.
Tomorrow (23 January) the nominations for it will be revealed, at an announcement combining live presentations from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater with ominous-sounding 'pre-taped category introductions'. Judging by the Academy's social media feeds, these look to star Rebel Wilson and a prosthetically-enhanced Rosario Dawson.
What time are the announcements?
At 5:22 am PST (1:22 pm GMT), the nominees will be announced in the following categories (listed here in no particular order): Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.
At 5:38 am PST, the nominees will be announced in the following categories (listed here in no particular order): Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Animated Feature Film, Directing, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Original Song, Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay.
Keep afloat of all of the nominations via our live blog.
What film will get the most nominations?
The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, judging by the award ceremonies we've already had this year, though the Oscars has more technical awards, which should give a nice bump to Blade Runner 2049 and Dunkirk.
How do I watch them?
On our live blog! Or if you live in the US, on several local broadcasters.
The Academy will almost certainly show them live on its YouTube and Facebook pages also. No fees or VPNs required.
