Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

British films have earned nominations in each of the major categories at this year's Oscars (scroll to see the nominees).

12 Years A Slave, which won Best Drama at the Golden Globes on Sunday, has picked up nominations for director Steve McQueen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender.

The film is also in the running for the biggest award of the ceremony – Best Picture.

Philomena has won three awards in the major categories, including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The film, which is based on a true story of an Irish woman who tries to find her adopted son, sees Judi Dench nominated for her performance as Philomena Lee.

Sally Hawkins, who stars alongside Cate Blanchett as her kooky adopted sister in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Gravity, which has been called a British film despite its notable American cast due to the amount of post-production that took place in the UK, has earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. Sandra Bullock is also in the running for Best Actress.
