Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Because frankly who wants to read them in size 8 font, here are some of this year's Oscars 2014 best film nominees as latte art portraits.

Gravity, Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle and Her were painstakingly recreating in coffee by barista artist (yes, that is a thing) Michael Breach, who posted the images on Instagram.

Sadly there were no such foam depictions for Dallas Buyers Club, Captain Phillips, 12 Years A Slave, Philomena and Nebraska however, which are also nominated in the category.

The 86th Academy Awards take place the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles tonight, with US chat show host Ellen DeGeneres in charge of proceedings.

The lengthy list of award announcements will be broken up by musical performances from Pharrell Williams, John Legend, U2 and Idina Menzel.

Karen O and Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig are also expected to make a surprise performance, after being spotted rehearsing The Moon Song from Spike Jonze's Her.
