From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

One Direction fans have been wreaking havoc in Cardiff after booking up almost all of the city’s accommodation to see their heroes live in concert.

The flood of ‘Directioners’ is so severe that coding convention DjangoCon Europe has had to be rescheduled because there are no hotels left for attendees to stay in.

The tech event was due to take place from 2 to 6 June but that was before the X Factor group scuppered their plans and announced gigs on 5 and 6 June. That pesky Harry Styles.

DjangoCon organisers wrote on their website that ticket sales for the event have had to be suspended temporarily, under a story amusingly headlined ‘Boy band disrupts DjangoCon Europe’.

“One Direction are a hugely popular boy band and they’ve decided to hold the only two UK dates of their European tour at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium – right in the middle of our conference,” a statement read.

“We’re left with no choice but to reschedule the event. We’ll probably find this funny, when we look back on it (perhaps as soon as fifty or sixty years from now) but at the moment we’re not enjoying the situation.”

Those who have already registered will receive a full refund if they cannot attend the new dates, confirmed today as from 31 May to 5 June.

“Everything is back on track and proceeding smoothly,” said co-organiser Jason Young. “We aren't angry at One Direction and in fact welcome any fans to drop in for the open day on the 31st!”

Django is behind the likes of Instagram and Pinterest and is also sometimes used in games development. If only the team could have found a way to form a sweet alliance with 1D - alas it was not to be.
