From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

As if designed to calm One Direction fans after their unnecessary distress this morning (those nightmare break-up rumours), news has broken of an upcoming movie about the boys based on fan fiction.

Anne Todd's book series After is being touted as a "Fifty Shades-type story for a younger generation" and Mom writer Susan McMartin is on board to pen the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

There are instant comparisons to EL James' erotic novels, which were themselves inspired by Twilight fan fiction.

Todd's lead character Tessa Young is a naive student similar to Anastasia Steele from Fifty Shades of Grey, who falls in love with a brooding, hard-to-read man.

But the similarities end there, as instead of BDSM-loving billionaire Christian Grey, Tessa falls for her Jane Austen-loving "rude boy" classmate Hardin, who is based on, you guessed it, One Direction singer Harry Styles. Fear not, Tessa goes on to meet Harry's pals Liam, Louis, Niall and *sob* Zayn.

After, first published on free story website Wattpad, comes with a message warning that it contains "detailed sexual scenes and tons of explicit language", as well as "loads and loads of typos".

More than one billion people read After online and it was published last October, followed by sequels After We Collided, After We Fell and After Ever Happy.

Todd tweeted news that a screenwriter had been found for After earlier today, but the release date is yet to be confirmed.
