Grease: Olivia Newton-John’s skin-tight outfit sold at auction for £313,000
Singer and actor is currently battling stage four breast cancer
The outfit worn by Olivia Newton-John in the climax to Grease has sold at auction for $405,700 (£314,000).
Newton-John’s leather jacket and skin-tight trousers, the latter which Newton-John had to be sewn into on the set, were used to mark the final transformation of her character Sandy in the 1978 film.
She memorably sings the film’s signature duet “You’re the One That I Want” with John Travolta while wearing the outfit.
The ensemble went up for auction in Beverly Hills this week along with items including Newton-John’s original script for the film and the dress she wore to the film’s premiere.
Newton-John previously stated that selling some of her memorabilia served as a “simplification of my life”.
In total, the auction raised $2.4 million (£1.8 million), with some of the proceeds going to Newton-John’s cancer treatment centre in Australia.
The singer and actor, 70, is currently battling cancer for the third time, having been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in 2017.
She said in August that she has chosen not to know how long she has left to live, explaining: “If you believe the statistics, you’re going to make them happen. If somebody tells you, ‘you have six months to live’, very possibly you will – because you believe that.”
Instead she is focused on fundraising for cancer research, specifically the effects of cannabis as a treatment for the disease.
