Actor and filmmaker Michaela Coel has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after being cast in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the sequel to the 2018 movie Black Panther.

Production has been underway for one of the world’s highest-grossing films for a month now, with director Ryan Coogler set to unveil the movie in July 2022, according to a report in the Variety.

No character details have been revealed yet and it is currently unknown what form the film will take, as lead star Chadwick Boseman died of cancer in August 2020.

However, it has been confirmed that Boseman’s role as the heroic king T’Challa will not be recast.

Coel will be joining returning cast members Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, and Angela Bassett, among others.

An insider source told Variety that the I May Destroy You actor has already joined Coogler at Atlanta’s Pinewood Studios, where production of the film is underway.

The British actor is best known for creating and starring in the E4 sitcom Chewing Gum, for which she won the BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance.

This year, the 33-year-old actor also won the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress for HBO’s drama series I May Destroy You.

She is known for her work in Netflix productions as well, including Black Mirror, Black Earth Rising and as Simone in the film Been So Long.

The original Black Panther grossed more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will arrive in cinemas on 8 July, 2022.
