From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Because even Jesus Christ can be mined for sweet sequel money, there is going to be a Passion of the Christ 2.

Mel Gibson and Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace are working on a sequel right now, the latter told The Hollywood Reporter, which will centre on Jesus’ rise from the dead.

I just hope it gets a snappy title like The Passion of the Christ 2: Resurrection, or The Passion of the Christ II: Dawn of the Messiah, or The Passion of the Christ Reloaded: This Time it’s Biblical.

Rumours had already been circulating about the project, which Wallace has now publicly disclosed because it was becoming too difficult to keep under wraps.

"I always wanted to tell this story," the screenwriter, who was a religion major at Duke University and specialised in the resurrection, said. "The Passion is the beginning and there's a lot more story to tell."

He most recently directed and co-wrote another faith-based movie, Heaven is for Real, and apparently got talking to Gibson about The Passion sequel while they were making war film Hacksaw Ridge.

The Passion of the Christ is the most successful independent film of all time, having taken $612 million at the box office worldwide.
