Ryan Gosling's experiences even ended up influencing one of the scenes in La La Land, and now Sing and Gold star Matthew McConaughey has revealed his worst ever audition experience to BBC News.
"I've had quite a few that didn't go well at all," he confessed. "Once I left the audition and pulled a U-turn on the highway 30 minutes later and returned and barged through the door to say: 'No - I'm doing that again!' - here we go'. I didn't get that job. There's nothing worse than leaving an audition thinking: 'I didn't quite go all the way'. That's hard to sleep with."
McConaughey voices koala Buster Moon in Sing, who stages an X-Factor style singing audition to help save his crumbling theatre; while he plays a prospector desperate for his luck break, in a move which sees him combat the most powerful boardrooms of Wall Street, in Stephen Gaghan's Gold.
Later this year, he'll star alongside Idris Elba in The Dark Tower, adapting Stephen King's series of eight novels, with other books contributing to his world-building; a mix of fantasy, horror, and western set in a realm known as Mid-World, and centered around Roland Deschain.
McConaughey will play The Man in Black, Walter; a warlock who has already reigned destruction on the people of Mid-World, now intent on destroying The Dark Tower, rumoured to be the nexus of all universes. The actor said of his role, ""Walter is not the devil but he does fancy himself as such. There are so many ways to be evil. You can do bad things or, as Walter does, expose hypocrisies and let them sink themselves."
"It's a plum role in a wonderful story of multiple worlds. I'm really looking forward to this coming out and I hope we'll be able to do quite a few."
