From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Jimmy Kimmel Live has aired its most star-studded edition of 'Celebrities read mean tweets' yet, with the cast of Monuments Men along with Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hanks and other A-listers coming to terms with their Twitter abuse.

The regular segment on the US chat show sees celebrities forced to read out the most bitter criticisms of themselves made online, with past participants including Aaron Paul, Amy Poehler and Russell Brand.

This edition went right to the top of the Oscars nominations list, with Blanchett reciting: "Can people stop saying Cate Blanchett is beautiful? Cate Blanchett is f**ckin gross dude."

"I'm very much looking forward to the day when the world stops sucking george clooney's t**t. lumpy faced basterd" (sic) the Monuments Men lead was told meanwhile, with Cumberbatch getting the succinct: "Benedict Cumberbatch what a d**khead."

The most caustic abuse was saved for Matt Damon however, who read out the tweet 'Too bad they don't give an Oscar for blowing ass because Matt Damon would win every year. Go buy another zoo and live in it, Bourne I-d**khead. #NODISRESPECTTOBENAFFLECK' only to find it was sent from host Kimmel himself.

Other Monuments Men actors Bill Murray, John Goodman and Bob Balaban also featured in the clip, which was designed to "raise awareness and hopefully make people think twice before they post something awful."
