Recent rumours suggested that Jackson would be reprising his role as eye-patch-wearing Avengers recruiter Nick Fury in the 2019 film following a role in Avengers: Infinity War - his first appearance since 2015 sequel Age of Ultron.
Marvel is yet to confirm the news despite Deadline's confirmation.
Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson in the title role as Air Force Pilot Carol Danvers and is being overseen by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson).
Infinity War has been touted by Marvel boss Kevin Feige as being the final chapter for several characters. The announced sequel to new film Spider-Man: Homecoming will reportedly be the introduction to Marvel's second phase following the as-of-yet untitled fourth Avengers film.
Considering Fury is the architect behind the initiative, it's certain he'll play a part in that film - his future beyond that, however -alongside characters Captain America, Iron Man and Thor - remains uncertain.
Captain Marvel will be released 8 March 2019.
