The first trailer for Logan - AKA Wolverine 3 - is finally here, featuring much older versions of Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart's characters.

Most of the clip centres on the titular character as Professor X asks him to protect another mutant, a young girl named Laura (thought to be X-23), as Johnny Cash's version of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" echoes out.

The British Board of Film Classification recently revealed the trailer is Rated 15 for the bloody content within, mainly thanks to Wolverine's failing healing power due to his age.

The first picture of Stephen Merchant as the mutant Caliban was released last week, the character appearing wearing a hood in the trailer. The character was recently featured in X-Men: Apocalypse, played by Tomas Lemarquis, with fans unsure exactly how the two are related. It's not clear where Logan fits into the X-Men timeline.

Details regarding various characters in the film have also appeared online thanks to the aforementioned social media account. First of all, it was confirmed that Boyd Holbrook will play Donald Pierce. A source revealed to one publication the character is “the head of security for a global corporation” known as Transigen who are turning baby mutants into ‘killing machines’.

According to the same source, actor Richard E. Grant will also play a Transigen employee, Dr. Zander Rice, whose father was part of the original ‘Weapon X’ project that helped create Wolverine (the clawed mutant killing his father). Rice is now the head of Weapon X.

Meanwhile, further plot details were revealed, including how ‘mutant births are severely in decline, and people aren’t sure why,’ something confirmed by the trailer. Hugh Jackman’s titular character ends up training Laura/X-23 who also has claws like Logan.

Speaking about the film in a recent interview, Jackman said: “Basically, it’s going to be different. Very different in tone and hopefully to anything we’ve done”. Mangold has since added: “If you're on the make for a hyper-choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG f**kathon, this ain't your movie.

“In this flick, people get hurt or killed when shit falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy, like, say, a car. Should anyone in our story have the misfortune to fall off a roof or out a window, they won't bounce. They will die.”

Logan hits cinemas 3 March 2017.
