"Putin would be very, very, very interesting. I would like to play him," he told German publication Welt (via NME); relaying that he'd once met the Russian president at the 2010 International Forum on Tiger Conservation in St. Petersburg, "My fund has several projects aimed at financial support for protecting these wild cats [Siberia tigers]. Putin and me spoke only about these magnificent animals, not about politics."
Indeed, DiCaprio seems to have a particular fascination with the country's political history; "I think there should be more films about Russian history because it has many stories worthy of Shakespeare. That is fascinating for an actor,” he enthused, “Lenin also would be an interesting role. I would like also to star as Rasputin.”
All vastly different roles; but the star's recent turn in The Revenant proves he still revels in thespian challenges. Putting himself under some widely publicised tribulations in his efforts to bring 19th-century frontiersman Hugh Glass to screen, DiCaprio seems now to have his Oscar glory finally on lock down; so perhaps his next steps are to look towards more personally significant projects. Of which Russian history seems to be of major interest.
Or, in short, DiCaprio thinks he's nailed the Russian accent and he's really keen to get it out there ASAP.
