From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Solo: A Star Wars Story looks set to stop that. While out promoting the movie, the writers hinted that Lando Calrissian ― played by Donald Glover in the prequel/spin-off ― may be pansexual.
“I would say yes,” Jonathan Kasdan, who wrote the movie with father Lawrence Kasdan, told The Huffington Post when asked whether the character is pansexual.
“There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.
“He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun. I don’t know where it will go.”
Lawrence Kasdan, who worked on Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens, was more ambiguous.
Star Wars has previously hinted at another high-profile LGBT+ character, although their sexuality was never shown on screen. The spin-off comic Leia: Princess of Alderaan suggested that Amilyn Holdo – played by Laura Dern in The Last Jedi – was queer. However, again, her sexuality was never expressly shown through actions or dialogue.
