From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

William Oldroyd's Lady Macbeth may feature a ruthless, ambitious woman at its centre - but this is a long way from Shakespeare.

This directorial debut actually adapts Russian writer Nikolai Leskov's 1865 novella Lady Macbeth of the Mtsenk, whose title is merely inspired by the Bard's work, reset now by first-time screenwriter Alice Birch to take place in the rolling fields of Somerset.

Florence Pugh steps up to the role of leading lady, playing the role of teenage bridge Katherine; shackled in her marriage to a bitter, cold man twice her age and his equally inhospitable family.

Embarking on a passionate affair with a worker on her husband's estate, a force is suddenly unleashed within her, one so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

The film also stars Cosmo Jarvis (Spooks: The Greater Good), Paul Hilton (Wuthering Heights), newcomer Naomi Ackie, and Christopher Fairbank (Guardians of the Galaxy).

Lady Macbeth hits UK cinemas on 28 April.
