The film swept the board at the Critics' Choice Awards with eight gongs; including crucial wins for Best Picture, Best Director for Chazelle, and Best Original Screenplay (tied with Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea).
Barry Jenkins' Moonlight picked up noticeably fewer awards than at other recent ceremonies, though it's still looking strong in the acting categories with Best Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.
One of the unique facets of the Critics' Choice Awards are the genre divisions, which allows for a greater mix in those receiving acclaim, with even Suicide Squad's Margot Robbie winning for her scene-stealing turn as Harley Quinn; as well as Ryan Reynolds winning Entertainer of the Year for bringing people joy both onscreen (as Deadpool) and off.
In TV, the wins largely reflected the shows commemorated at this year's Emmys, including The People v. O.J. Simpson and Game of Thrones; though Thandie Newton's win for Westworld is a promising look at what next year's TV award landscape may turn out to be.
