The Twilight star, 24, made the decision to swap acting for other forms of art "a few weeks ago" after finding herself wanting a fresh challenge.
"I'm taking some time off because I've been working for two years," she told USA Today earlier this week.
"I'm an actor and that's my art form, and because I started that so young, I've always felt intimidated and insufficient when I think about other forms of art I want to create."
Stewart, who can currently be seen playing Guantanamo Bay army recruit Amy Cole in Camp X-Ray, also revealed how she plans to spend her free time.
"I'm going to take so much time off," she said. "I'm going to buy a live-work space in downtown LA and I’m going to make some [stuff] with my hands."
Among other projects, Stewart is busy making a short film. "I don't know how I'll put it out," she added. "But I'm not going to hold it so preciously close to me. I write all the time. I love hard work."
The US actress has already forayed into the poetic world, as fans learnt when she shared her poem "My Heart is a Wiffle Ball/Freedom Pole" (in full below) with Marie Claire readers in February.
"I don't want to sound so f*cking utterly pretentious but after I write something, I go, 'Holy f*ck, that's crazy," Stewart said at the time, modestly.
"It's the same thing with acting. If I do a good scene, I'm always like, 'Whoa, that’s really dope'."
