The follow-up to last year’s hit film will see Daniel Craig’s drawling detective Benoit Blanc attempt to solve a new standalone mystery.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer announced the news during the studio’s quarterly earnings call.
Knives Out was a light-hearted murder mystery romp focusing on the death of a wealthy patriarch. Alongside Craig, the film starred Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield and Michael Shannon.
It is still available to see in cinemas, and is expected to gross $300m (£232m) worldwide. Knives Out is also in contention for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay at this Sunday’s Oscar ceremony.
Writer-director Rian Johnson, who is best known for making the critically beloved (but popularly divisive) Star Wars film The Last Jedi, had previously spoken about his desire to make a sequel.
It has long been assumed that any follow-up would focus on Craig’s whimsical Southern-American gumshoe.
In the first film, he functioned as a Hercule Poirot-like figure who is invited into the dysfunctional home of the Thrombey family. With the mystery solved, it would make sense for the next film to involve a new setting and different set of characters.
The sequel will likely be released in 2021.
